This is a Pre-Civil War coin. Unlike later 3 cent coins, this is made out of 75% Silver. Later it was 90% silver.
It used to be called a "Trime".
This is the smallest US coin I have seen. It is 14mm. A dime is 17.8mm.
It is 1/2 the thickness of a dime.
Most of the 3 cent coins you will see are the so called 3-cent nickels. They are 17.9mm.
