The color "red" (RD) is a grade given by coin certification services like PCGS or NGC to copper coins that retain 95% or more of their original mint color. This condition is rarer than "red-brown" (RB) or "brown" (BN) pennies because copper naturally oxidizes and darkens over time when exposed to air and moisture.
Standard Red Pennies: A standard uncirculated "red" 1974 penny (minted in Philadelphia, Denver, or San Francisco) can typically be purchased for a few dollars or slightly more. Uncirculated examples in high grades (MS66 or higher) are scarcer and can sell for hundreds or even thousands of dollars at auction.
Error Coins: Pennies with significant errors, such as a double die obverse (DDO), major die breaks (cud errors), or off-center strikes, command higher values, especially if they are also in "red" condition.
