Ivory - Biwa Dyeing
- Biwa is a plant with such strong pigmentation that the juice from its fruit can stain clothes. It is known that not only the fruit, but also the liquid from the leaves can be used to dye fabrics. Moreover, pastel colors that cannot be expected from the green leaves are produced, making the dyed fabrics very impressive. The loquat has been called the “Great Medicinal Tree” since ancient times, and has been carefully cultivated in temples and other places as a plant with medicinal properties. It is also believed to be good for health and skin. These products are dyed with biwa leaves.
- Taiseiyo-zome has been used as a dye for indigo dyeing since ancient times. Originally, it is said to have antibacterial and antiviral effects as well as to strengthen threads. Recently, it has been found to have a shielding effect against ultraviolet rays and is being researched.
- In the Heian period (794-1185), gobiko was used to dye black, and was also used as a medicine. The natural black color has a deep taste unique to natural dyes. It also has antibacterial properties and inhibits the growth of bacteria that cause bad odors. (Because of its antibacterial and deodorizing properties, it was used for tooth blackening to prevent tooth decay and alveolar pyorrhea and to control bad breath.)
