For three years, Greg Glassbrenner photographed Malik, the leader of the violent street gang the Crips. In 2018, Malik was shot by a rival gang and became paralyzed from the waist down. As a result, his life revolves around a small apartment in the Bronx, New York, where he is cared for by his family and fellow gang members.
Glassbrenner, who works as a doctor, takes photos in the Bronx in his spare time and got to know the local children. He noticed that many young people in wheelchairs had spinal injuries, which piqued his professional interest. He was told that they had all been shot, and Glassbrenner wanted to talk to someone in a wheelchair, so he was introduced to Malik through his fellow Crips.
