Unglazed terracotta clay, "grotto" or dome-style nativity
Manufacturer & Origin
This piece is a classic example of Peruvian Folk Art. These are typically handmade by artisans in the pottery regions of Peru (such as Ayacucho or Cusco) rather than by a single mass-market manufacturer.
• Identifying Marks: The small holes on the bottom (shown in your second photo) are vent holes. These allow steam to escape during the kiln-firing process so the thick clay doesn't explode. Because these are artisan-made, they often lack a formal brand stamp, though some may have "Peru" or an artist's name incised by hand.
• Style: The textured "comb" marks on the hair and the simple, rounded forms of the figures are hallmarks of South American terracotta tradition.
Based on the style and the "aged" patina of the clay, this piece likely dates to the late 1970s through the 1990s. This was a peak period for the exportation of South American folk art to North American and European gift shops and church bazaars
