Circa 1938 | 10k Gold | Synthetic Ruby Cabochon | 1.39 dwt size 5.5
This delicate 10k gold ring belonged to Lillian Mae Whitaker, a young woman raised on a peach farm outside Macon, Georgia. In 1938, at just seventeen, Lillian was gifted this ring by her older sister Clara upon completing secretarial school; a milestone for women stepping into independence during the pre-war years.
The ring’s glowing magenta stone, a synthetic ruby cabochon, symbolized courage and passion traits Lillian carried with her as she boarded a train north to take a job in a NJ office building. She wore it daily as a quiet emblem of her sister's faith in her future. The etched golden leaves on each side reflect the Southern flora of her youth a nod to home, no matter how far she wandered.
She would eventually return to Georgia, marry a teacher, and keep this ring tucked in a handkerchief drawer, brought out only for church services and anniversary dinners.
