vintage World War II United States Army Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) shoulder sleeve insignia patches. These are known as "theater-made" patches, created by local economies to be worn by occupation forces in Germany/Europe at the end of WWII.
The design, sometimes called the "Flaming Sword of Free" or "Hap Arnold emblem," features a white star with a red circle, gold wings, and a red flaming sword on a blue background.
The patches were worn by personnel assigned to the Headquarters of the United States Air Forces in Europe command.
The insignia was authorized shortly after VE-Day, when the United States Strategic Air Forces (USSTAF) was redesignated as the USAFE on August 7, 1945.
